Chapter 01
Julie’s failure to fulfil her potential is splashed across the city’s media by a fake friend.
It is post 9/11, and Julie works at a call centre at the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation dealing with other people’s crises. Julie has a loving, supportive husband but a stressful job. She has the soul of a writer but no outlet and sporadic inspiration, and a history of never finishing her projects. She feels, in short, that there must be more to life than this.
Julie draws inspiration from the person she most admires, Julia Child, who became a famous American TV chef in the early 960s. Encouraged by her husband, Eric, Julie embarks on a blog of her progress through Julia’s cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. It contains over 500 recipes that Julie sets out to cook in precisely one year.
Between work and cooking, Julie reads books about Julia’s life, which is told in flashbacks starting in postwar Paris. The parallels between Julie and Julia's lives become apparent: discouraged by her mother just as Julia suffers the disapproval of her father and the director of the Cordon Bleu school; relocated for their husbands’ work, both women are directionless until finding inspiration, purpose and joy through food and cooking, especially for husbands who adore what they produce.
However, Julie’s life is more challenging than that of her idealised Julia. The two women love their husbands and cooking, but Julie’s love for one puts the other to the test. Working in a cramped kitchen, a far cry from the one in Julia's expansive, gracious, Parisian apartment, within a tight budget, overwhelmed by the enormity of the task she has set herself and intoxicated by her growing popularity with her blog readers, brings Julie’s marriage to the brink and threatens her job.

In my own words...
50 Feel-better Films is the culmination of a project over a number of years to assemble a list of films that have had, at least, a mood-lifting effect on myself, on friends and on strangers, many recommended on sites around the internet. The collection carries no medical authority but I have handpicked each film for this particular purpose. In these movies, there are no fixes of what is broken, only new and improved. There are no deaths of subsidiary characters we have grown attached to, there is no wistful sadness, there is only hope and fulfilment and happiness at the ending of each of these stories.
Films are made by the entertainment industry and therefore are primarily for amusement and enjoyment. However, some of the vast output has a restorative effect; stories written from personal experience or understanding of situations that level lives as with a baseball bat.
From the cellar of despair, you might say that these are just fairy tales, but all of them, without exception, are based on real life. These things happened to people who were pushed, fell, searched, or allowed themselves into new beginnings that developed into outcomes that equalled, or were even far better than, the relationships, careers or homes they lost.
At the bottom of the emotional staircase, or scale (more about this here), you may not be ready even for the inspirational and motivational and so, although these films are also those things, this list is designed simply to include something to make you feel better, even if it’s just a little. For those who are happy and want to feel even happier, this is also a compilation for you.
I'd love to know what worked for you and if there are some you'd like to see added in an expanded book.
